This week in the life…

Greetings,

As the outer planet like cold grips the midsection and all points east of our country, I sit here listening to some nice music and enjoying the fact that I’m on the fringe of said weather.  I can’t imagine 50f below.  I’m sure that’s due to lack of practice or desire. I do own a snow shovel. May it remain like new until the day I die.

As someone with an I.T. background, I should be a bit ashamed to confess this.  And it has put a dent in new edits for this week.  My storage system is a single box that has four 8tb drives in it and is configured as a RAID drive.  To enlighten those with far more interesting lives, a RAID array of drives is magical in that any one drive can totally fail and none of the information is lost.  A new drive of the same size can actually replace the bad drive, even while the system is still running, and within a day or so the system is back to being safe from a drive failure.  Although 4x8=32 I don’t actually have 32tb when using it as a RAID array; it’s more like 22tb but it’s well worth the safety margin. Witch of the North kind of magic.

The weak link is that the box the drives are in has the single computer that organizes all of that magic.  And if that fails; not good.  So, Tomorrow I have a new box coming and once I place the 4 drives in it I should be back up and running.  Considering that is 5 or 6 years worth of my work, I have yet another identical box coming later in the week and already have the 32tb of drives waiting for it.  That box will only be a full backup of the original and the backup will run every night.

That endith the technology drivel for today.  Oh, you there!  Backup.  Everything.  Now.

So, this issue of the Museletter will be all about some favorites from past work.  Very random, but loved.

And I want to thank those who bought the PDF book from last week’s issue.  So many.  Thank you!  I’m encouraged to create a second volume.  I think I have plenty of content. Thoughts? Requests?

Stay warm.  Stay happy.  Unwrap each day as the gift that it is.

Dave
